Victorian School Day

12th Jun 2026

Today in Primary 7, we have been learning about the reality of school life during Victorian times. We transformed our classroom and stepped back in time to experience school life in the Victorian era.

The children experienced a strict school regime, requiring them to sit to attention in rows with segregated boys and girls. The girls enjoyed sewing while the boys marched and calculated using shillings and pence.

Children wrote on slate and practised their handwriting using a quill pen dipped in ink from an ink well. This was much more challenging than expected.

Use of the Dunce cap proved surprisingly popular, much to the amusement of others.

At playtime, traditional Victorian games, such as skipping, hopscotch, skittles, racing hoops and lots of other games were enjoyed by all.

P7 thoroughly enjoyed their experience and the opportunity to practise gratitude for how different school is in modern times.
